Diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Problems by Swallowing Bacteria-Coated Chips!

Gastrointestinal problems are difficult to diagnose as they occur within the digestive system. Procedures like endoscopy, colonoscopy have been discovered. They are helpful for the doctors but quite convenient and at times painful for the patients. To ease this issue, researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have devised a bacteria-coated chip that can actually detect bleeding or other disorders within the gastrointestinal tract. The patient would just need to swallow the chip possibly in the form of a capsule. The researchers have engineered a strain of E.coli that will generate a response (emit light) on encountering heme (protein component of blood). This is how the bacteria will be able to diagnose bleeding within the gastrointestinal tract.
