2016 CSE Annual Meeting: Enago Joins the “New Frontier” with CSE
Denver, CO: Enago is gearing up for the 2016 Council of Science Editors’ (CSE) annual meeting. This year’s conference, entitled “Thriving in the New Frontier,” will be held from May 14 to May 17 in Denver, CO, USA. Among Enago’s contingent will be Sheryl Vaz, a CSE scholarship recipient. Since 2011, from an extensive list of applicants, CSE has awarded this scholarship to only six professionals. Sheryl is one of only three recipients of the CSE Scholarship, which supports editors and publishing professionals to attend the annual meeting and help increase their knowledge of the scholarly publishing industry.
Founded in 1957, CSE’s mission is to be an authoritative resource on current and emerging issues in the communication of scientific information. Since 1957, CSE has undergone several transitions and its annual meeting has now become one the most popular events for scholarly publishing in North America; it serves as a key meeting ground for industry experts and editors in the STEM industry. This year’s keynote address will be given by Pulitzer-prize winning science journalist Deborah Blum, director of MIT’s prestigious Knight Science Journalism Program and author of The Poisoner’s Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York. In her talk, Ms. Blum will explore how journalists today are connecting with the public on issues related to academia and science. The three-day event will include several short courses for journal editors and manuscript editors, as well as other sessions on publication management. The event will also feature several concurrent sessions related to editing and publishing.
As part of the CSE scholarship program, the recipients receive complimentary registration and a travel grant to attend the annual meeting. For this year’s meeting, from the numerous applicants, Sheryl has been selected for the $2,000 scholarship. Speaking of the application process, Sheryl said, “Crimson has always opened up new avenues to those with talent and the dedication to achieve their goals. The application process was quite straightforward and thought provoking. A few months after the application, CSE informed me that I have received the prestigious opportunity of attending the conference in Denver, CO, this year. I believe that organizations like CSE provide early career professionals such as myself with a fresh perspective on the publishing industry. I am really looking forward to meeting others from different backgrounds in the STM industry and understanding their perspectives of the industry. I will also be documenting my trip with interesting tidbits, my experience, and a whole lot of photographs, so keep watching this space for more!”
“The learning and development initiatives at Crimson Interactive have given many of our editors the opportunity to progress in their careers and increase their perspective of the academic publishing industry,” said Anupama Kapadia, Senior Manager, Editorial Operations, Enago. “Although Enago has been participating at CSE’s annual meetings for several years as an exhibitor, we felt that it the time was right for Crimsonites who handle different aspects of Enago’s editorial functions to closely interact with global industry experts and disseminate what they learn to their team members. Last year, Dr. Krishna Kumar attended the conference and wrote an extensive report that was published in the prestigious journal ESE. This year, we have Sheryl attending the conference through the prestigious CSE Scholarship Program. I, too, will be attending CSE 2016, and am equally excited to be part of this enterprising opportunity. See you all in Denver #CSE2016!”
