Insulin: A Potent Cure for Chronic Colitis?
A large number of patients suffering from type-2 diabetes require regular insulin injections. But do you know that insulin also has the potential for curing chronic colitis? According to a study published by a collaborative team of researchers from the University of Copenhagen and Roskilde University, injecting insulin into the rectum of mice cures chronic bowel inflammation. The study, published in the Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis, is based on the experiment conducted on mice suffering from chronic ulcerosa. The researchers discovered that insulin activates certain cells within the bowel cells that have an antioxidant effect on the latter, thus preventing its inflammation. After obtaining positive results on mice, the researchers have plans to set up a company that could undertake systematic clinical trials. Once positive results are obtained in case of humans, they plan to introduce this new therapy into the market to treat patients suffering from chronic bowel disorders.
