Maximizing Your Chances of Publication: Best practices to avoid journal rejection

Every researcher aims to publish their work in high impact peer-reviewed scientific journals. However, publishing research is no easy task, and manuscript rejection is a common occurrence in academic writing. Enago in collaboration with Kasetsart University conducted an interactive webinar series to help researchers improve their awareness about the peer review process, manuscript decisions, common errors made leading to rejection, and how to handle rejections from journals.
Topic 1: Top 10 Tips for Avoiding Journal Rejection
For a smooth publication journey, researchers must ensure that their manuscripts are well-structured and meet the high standards of academic writing before submission to an impactful journal. In our first session, we will help researchers understand the most common reasons for journal rejections and provide them with essential tips and strategies to achieve publication success. Further, we will also help authors interpret reviewers’ comments and guide them on manuscript revisions and timely resubmission.
Researchers will learn:
- How to conduct a robust literature review
- How to write each section of the manuscript
- How to present research data effectively
- Acknowledging sources properly
- How to ensure research reproducibility
- How to ensure fluency, clarity, and readability
- Importance of editing and proofreading
- Peer review process
- How to address reviewer comments and make an effective appeal upon rejection
Topic 2: How to Handle Journal Rejection — Converting a Failure into an Opportunity!
Manuscript rejection is common and could be because of several reasons including an insignificant research topic, weak hypothesis, poor methodology, and research misconduct. Researchers should keep calm and not be disheartened upon rejection. Instead, they should take it as a learning opportunity and work towards rectifying their mistakes. The second session is primarily targeted toward researchers who are aware of the overall publication process but face difficulty in handling rejections from journals. We will discuss how researchers should have a positive approach to rejection such as opting for ways to improve the manuscript based on reviewer comments and alternative routes to publication.

About the Speaker
Despina Sanoudou, Ph.D. (Cambridge), FACMG, Professor at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
An established researcher, public speaker, and published author, Dr. Sanoudou is an award-winning medical researcher with over 130 publications in renowned scientific journals and books, an H-index of 43, and over 6,200 citations. She is the Head of the Clinical Genomics and Pharmacogenomics Unit at the 4th Department of Internal Medicine and collaborating Faculty at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens. Dr. Sanoudou received her Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge and served as Faculty at the Harvard Medical School. She has also worked as a coordinator for an international genomics/pharmacogenomics program and as a fellow with Genzyme and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She has received more than 20 competitive research grants from international or national organizations. As a Publication and Training Consultant with Enago Academy, she conducts webinars and workshops to help researchers understand the nuances of academic writing and publishing. To date, Dr. Sanoudou has presented at >400 national and international meetings, served as a peer reviewer for 50 international journals, and chaired several seminars. She is also on the editorial board of multiple international scientific journals.
