<figure class="image"><img src="../images/about-us/news/Annual-Meeting-Memphis.jpg" alt=""></figure>The American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) hosted its 74th Annual Meeting in Memphis, TN, from October 8 to 11. Founded in 1940, AMWA is the leading professional organization for writers, editors, and other communicators of medical information. The association offers a highly regarded continuing education program, including distance learning and a certificate program. The annual conference features prominent speakers, discussion sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities. The theme of this year’s meeting was&nbsp;Shake, Rattle, and Write,&nbsp;with the concept of shaking up old ways of thinking, rattle brains with bold new ideas and re-apply and renew the membership to their profession.&nbsp; The meeting had around 800 attendees with 21 exhibitors. The focus of the meeting was very much educational as most of the sessions were geared towards teaching very specifically about the medical writing profession. Running concurrently with the sessions were additional hands-on paid seminars covering a very large list of topics from basic grammar to writing abstracts to biomedical laboratory research methods.&nbsp; Some of the session topics covered subject matter such as<ul><li>How to Tame Your Timeline Dragons: Project Management and Negotiation</li><li>Breaking In: How to Get Your Start in Regulatory Medical Writing</li><li>How to Write and Design Online Health Content Consumers Will Use</li><li>Leading, Managing, and Writing in a Global Virtual Environment</li><li>How To: Improving the Skills of Grant Proposal Writers</li><li>How To: Make Your Message Memorable: The Power of Story</li></ul> There were numerous networking opportunities provided with the opening reception, Graceland Tour (a must do), Local Chapter Greet and Go, and on the last evening, Dine Around, where you were able to choose a topic and have dinner with a group of 10-15 other attendees. Overall, we found the conference beneficial in understanding the challenges faced by the medical writing community and by the opportunity to meet with both writers, editors, and the business’ that work in that space.
